Program Steps
Parent-Taught 14hr Behind-The-Wheel
How the BTW Program Works
Just 5 steps between you and your certificate - no classroom content, since you've already completed that elsewhere. We'll walk you and your parent instructor through every one.
Before you begin, your parent instructor needs to meet Texas's eligibility requirements: a valid Texas driver's license held for at least 3 years, no DUI/DWI convictions in the past 7 years, and a clean-enough driving record. Eligible instructors include a parent, step-parent, grandparent, step-grandparent, foster parent, or legal guardian.
If no family member qualifies, Texas allows a designated instructor instead - a volunteer at least 25 years old with 7+ years of driving experience, who completes a notarized designation form included in the packet.
Once eligibility is confirmed, order the official PTDE Program Guide from TDLR for $20. It's delivered by email and includes your 452PT receipt number, which you'll need for enrollment, your certificate, and your DPS visit.
Important
- Don't start logging hours before ordering your packet. Any hours logged before you have your TDLR receipt number don't count toward your requirement.
Enter your information and your parent instructor's - their full legal name, driver's license number, and your TDLR PTDE packet receipt number. This is what will appear on your certificate, so it's worth getting right the first time.
Good to know
- You'll get a chance to review and update this again before your certificate is issued
This is formal instruction with your parent instructor only: 7 hours of in-car observation and 7 hours of behind-the-wheel driving, logged right here as you go. Daily limits apply (max 2 hours of driving and 4 hours combined per day), so this takes a minimum of 4 days.
Good to know
- Only the parent instructor listed on your TDLR packet can supervise these hours
- Already started logging hours? Your entries carry over automatically from the 14-Hour Log page, which also lets you print a copy for your records
One last check before your certificate is issued - double-check your name, your parent instructor's name and license number, and your TDLR receipt number.
Worth the extra minute
- If a mistake makes it onto your certificate, there's a $20 correction and reissuance fee to fix it afterward
Print your certificate from your My Certificates page, then keep it together with your 24-hour classroom completion certificate from the other school - you'll need both for your road test. You can test at a Texas DPS office (free, but appointments vary by location) or at a DPS-authorized third-party driving school (typically $50-100, but often faster).
What to bring, either way
- Your 24-hour classroom certificate from the other school
- The certificate you earn here for your 14 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction
- Your completed 30-hour supervised practice log
- Your ITTD certificate (free, valid 90 days)
- Your current learner permit, plus the $16 provisional license fee
