How Teen Driver's Ed Works
The 24-hour online course is identical either way. What changes is who teaches the 14 hours of behind-the-wheel driving. Here's exactly what to expect from start to finish.
Both paths complete the exact same 24-hour TDLR-approved online course. The only difference is who teaches the required 14 hours of behind-the-wheel driving:
- Instructor Led - No TDLR paperwork. Complete the behind-the-wheel hours with any certified driving school, on their schedule.
- Parent Taught - A parent or guardian registers with TDLR as the instructor and teaches the 14 hours directly, on your own schedule.

Work through the 24-hour course entirely online, at your own pace, on any device. After finishing the first 6 hours and passing the written test, you'll get a DE-964E certificate - take that to any Texas DPS office (age 15+) along with proof of identity and residency to get your learner permit.
Finish the remaining hours whenever it fits your schedule - there are no live sessions to attend.
This is where the two paths differ:
- Instructor Led - Schedule these 14 hours with any certified Texas driving school. No TDLR registration needed on your end.
- Parent Taught - Your parent instructor orders the $20 TDLR PTDE packet, then teaches 7 hours of observation and 7 hours of driving directly. Daily limits apply (max 2 hours of driving and 4 hours combined per day).
Same for both paths. Any adult at least 21 years old with a valid license for 1+ year can supervise these hours - not just the instructor from Step 3.
- 30 total hours of supervised practice driving, with at least 10 hours at night
- The free, 2-hour Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) course, run by DPS - desktop or laptop only, certificate must be printed
Test at a Texas DPS office with your own registered, insured vehicle, or through a DPS-authorized third-party driving school for a sealed results envelope. Bring your DE-964 certificate, both driving logs, your ITTD certificate, your permit, and the $16 license fee.
Until you turn 18, your provisional license carries a few restrictions: no more than 1 passenger under 21 outside your family, no driving midnight-5am except for work/school/emergencies, and no cell phone use while driving.
